The Embassy of Bangladesh to Nepal in partnership with Energy Development Council (EDC) and Independent Power Producers’ Association, Nepal (IPPAN) organized an Interaction Session on “Power Sector Cooperation Between Bangladesh and Nepal”. H.E Mr. Nasrul Hamid, MP, Honorable State Minister, Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources of Bangladesh, People’s Republic of Bangladesh was the Chief Guest of the program. The Session took place on August 10th 2018 at Hotel Hyatt Regency, Bouddha, Kathmandu.

Mr. Shailendra Guragain, President of IPPAN, welcomed the attendees, while Mr. Khadga Bahadur Bisht, Immediate Past President of IPPAN gave a presentation highlighting hydropower investment opportunities in Nepal. Mr. Maha Prasad Adhikari, CEO, Office of the Investment Board, Nepal delivered a presentation on “Investment Opportunities in Power sector for Bangladesh in Nepal”.

Honorable State Minister Mr. Nasrul Hamid in his Keynote address deliberated on the achievements made in Bangladeshi powers sector and emphasized that cross border electricity through regional cooperation would play a pivotal role in development of the SAARC region.

The Minister mentioned that Bangladesh would need a total investment of $ 80 billion to generate 60,000 MW to meets its demand of becoming a developed country by 2040.  As per their plan, Bangladesh would generate 35% from coal, 35% from gas, 10% from renewable, 11% from cross order trades, 6% from nuclear and 3% from hydropower plant and other resources.

He mentioned that Bangladesh plans in to import 9,000 MW of electricity from Nepal to mitigate the demand by 2040.

He also suggested that he would take an initiative to call for a meeting between delegation from Independent Power Producer’s of Nepal and Bangladesh in same table.

Mr. Semanta Dahal, member of executive committee member, conducted the panel discussion with HE Mr. Nasrul Hamid on themes covering Cross Border Electricity trade, Cooperation to Invest and Construct Projects in Nepal, Electricity Sector Reforms, and Rural Electrification and Energy Efficiency and also moderated the question and answer session between the Minister and the audience.

H.E Ms. Mashfee Binte Shams, Ambassador of People’s Republic of Bangladesh to Nepal and Mr. Kushal Gurung, Head of Executive Committee Members, Energy Development Council also addressed the seminar.
